The harvest of greenhouse tomatoes is beyond all expectations

Main » Uncategorized » The harvest of greenhouse tomatoes is beyond all…

Greenhouse vegetable yield in January-April rose by 30% versus the same period last year, informs Minari.

As of early May, the yield has exceeded 283k tonnes versus 218k tonnes collected last year, including cucumbers – 217k tonnes (22%), tomatoes – 61k tonnes (66%). The production of other vegetables grew by 28% and amounted to 5k tonnes.

Market participants are sure that the growth of yield became possible due to the increase in greenhouse area: within 2017 251 ha of new complexes were commissioned resulting in a 6% increase – up to 2,27k ha.

The area of spring greenhouses grew by 46 ha. Now they occupy approx. one hectare.

Moreover, the yield of greenhouse crops also increased. It totalled almost 37 kilos per square meter, i.e. 32% more than in 2013.

It is odd, that the retail prices are still high. For instance, the price on tomatoes in Russian stores ranges from 110 to 230 RUB per kilo. Much more expensive than bananas and pineapples coming from oversea. Why is it so?

For info: production of greenhouse vegetables last year amounted to 922k, representing 13% increase if compared to 2016. The greenhouse leaders are the Krasnodar and Stavropol territories and Bashkortostan.
