According to the annual list of agriculture land owners of Russia compiled by the consulting company BEFL, land bank of the Miratorg company comprised 1 m ha in 2018 (the account period: May 2018 – May 2019) last year the company controlled 676 k ha and it took the second position after the Prodimex Group (its land bank grew from 790 k to 865 k ha for the previous year). It is the first time for the last five years when the company owned by a millionaire Igor Khudokormov moved from the leading position.
The list of major land owners includes: Rusagro (650 k ha), Agrocomplex imeni N.I. Tkacheva (649 k ha) and EkoNiva-APK (504 k ha). The latter expanded the land bank by 170 k ha in 2018 and it became one of the biggest expansions in the list.
The BEFL’s report says that 2018 was not marked by any outstanding deals involving huge volumes of land bank unlike 2017. But 2019 is able to change it as the number of preliminary agreements of major holdings which can probably end up in merging has been announced since the beginning of the year. In particular, it is a purchase of the Solnechnye Produkty holding by Rusagro in October 2018, an agreement between French Sucden and Group of Companies Trio (at the end of January Sucden covenanted about the purchase of a major share of the sugar business of the Lipetsk company).
The top list of BEFL included 56 companies with the total land bank of 13.5 m ha, 27% of which is controlled by the first five companies. Total land bank controlled by the top 5 companies is 4% bigger than last year and almost 2 times bigger than 7 years ago. According to the Federal Agency for State Registration, Cadastre, and Cartography as of 1 January 2018, total square of agriculture land in Russia undergoes almost no changes and comprised 383.2 m ha, 51.6% of which is referred to agricultural fields. Meanwhile the analysts from BEFL noticed the increase of land bank owned by legal entities.
